USU Retention and First-Year Experience's Name Changes

The Utah State University Retention and First-Year Experience, created in 2006, officially changed their name to The Office of Retention and Student Success.

“We not only wanted to change our name to help our constituents understand what we do, but make sure we weren’t limiting our retention efforts to primarily first-year students,” said Noelle Call, director of Retention and Student Success.

The office was created to coordinate, develop and oversee the transition of students into the university environment. In addition, the office provides supervision of the matriculation and academic action process and coordinates and reports on research efforts related to retention and student success.

“In the last three years the office has developed and expanded programs and initiatives that extend well beyond the first-year student to serve students and support faculty and staff at all levels of the university,” Call said.

Many of the services include the University Connections, Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR), Aggie Experience Passport, Early Academic Alert, Retention Task Force and a Retention and Student Success newsletter.

“It is through our focused efforts, and support to the entire campus that retention and student success efforts are developed and implemented by the colleges and departments,” Call said. “It is often quoted that ‘retention is everybody’s business,’ so it is with ‘student success.’”
