LOGAN, Utah — For fourth-year student Travis Slade, the college experience at Utah State University has been defined by a unique balance between the technical world of mechanical engineering and the high-energy world of semi-professional dunking.

Originally from Colorado, Travis was drawn to USU by its well-respected mechanical engineering program and the tight-knit feel of the department. His journey was further shaped by an Air Force ROTC scholarship, which he views as a vital second half of his student life.

“Half the time I’m taking mechanical engineering classes ... and the other half I’m in ROTC classes, which focus on leadership and Air Force core values," Slade said.

Beyond the classroom and drills, Travis found a creative outlet in the Utah Dunk Club. Alongside three peers, he has traveled across the country and the state of Utah, performing at over 15 events, including gym openings, parades and basketball games.

“Dunking has allowed me to get out of my comfort zone and perform in front of people," Slade said. It’s given me the unique experience to be confident in who I am."

Travis credits his time at USU with teaching him the value of preparation. Whether it's preparing for a physics exam or leading physical training for over 100 cadets, he believes that showing up prepared is the ultimate key to success.

A pivotal moment for Travis occurred during field training in Alabama, where he realized the strength of the Air Force team. Seeing the passion of various officers solidified his commitment to the mission.

Upon graduation, Travis will commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. His immediate plans include attending tech school in Mississippi for cyberspace operations training. Looking five years ahead, he envisions himself serving as a captain and pursuing a graduate degree in cybersecurity.

Regardless of where his career takes him, Travis carries his Aggie identity with pride. "I'm always happy to tell people I'm an Aggie ... we all identify ourselves as Utah State Aggies."
