USU Geologist Successfully Completes 2008 Iditarod

Utah State University geology lecturer Sue Morgan sailed into Nome, Alaska with her dogsled team Sunday afternoon, March 16, as the 72nd finisher in the 2008 Iditarod. Morgan completed the grueling 1,117-mile journey in 14 days, 31 minutes and 30 seconds.

The lone Utahn in the race, Morgan was among a record 95 mushers who started the competition March 2 from Willow, Alaska. She attempted the race in 2006 but had to drop out due to injuries she sustained in a sled crash.

Seventy-eight competitors finished the 2008 race. Lance Mackey of Fairbanks, Alaska won this year’s Iditarod, his second consecutive win, clocking in at nine days, 11 hours, 46 minutes and 48 seconds.

Through a local competition, Morgan is offering the opportunity for a Cache Valley teacher to participate in the Iditarod’s summer educational conference. Read more.
