Faculty Development and Diversity Workshop

The Faculty Development and Diversity Workshop series, sponsored by Utah State University’s Provost’s Office, continues Thursday, April 9, at 3 p.m. in the Center Colony room of the Taggart Student Center with the presentation “Heart of the Art: Emotional Intelligence and Teaching in Higher Education.”

The presentation is hosted by Deborah Byrnes of the School of Teacher Education and Leadership. Byrnes holds graduate degrees in counseling education and child development, as well as an undergraduate degree in teaching. During her 25 years at Utah State she has received awards for teaching, research, service, diversity enhancement and exemplary use of technology. She has authored or co-authored two books and more than 75 journal articles and chapters. Most recently her research interests are focused on the interpersonal and intrapersonal skills of teachers and their students.

Ann Austin, vice provost for faculty development and diversity, encourages all faculty members to attend the workshop which focuses on emotional intelligence.

“As professors, we know that good teaching includes expertise in three areas: subject matter, teaching methods and the affective tone in the classroom,” Austin said. “This workshop will help us think more deeply about the affective dimension of teaching by examining our own emotional intelligence and the role it plays in the learning environment.”

All faculty members are invited to come explore the impact of emotional intelligence on the educational environment of the classroom, and how to translate emotional intelligence into increased learning and excitement about learning for students. Light refreshments will be provided.

More information on this workshop is available on the Provost’s Web site.
