Racing to Recycle

Utah State University is half way to the finish line for this year’s RecycleMania competition. More than 600 schools are participating in the competition, which aims to increase recycling efforts in colleges and universities across the continent. The competition runs from Jan. 17 through March 27.

Last year, USU recycled a total of 139,518.5 pounds during the 10-week competition, and USU’s Recycling Center hopes to beat that number this year. So far, USU is on track to meet its goal.

RecycleMania Events:

- Tour of USU’s recycling facility (870 East 1250 N.), ongoing (check university calendar for special tour dates in February and March)
  • USU’s recycling plant is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Every day employees hand-sort everything that comes to the facility, but visitors are always welcome. Visitors can tour the facility and try sorting recyclables that come in on a conveyor belt. Those interested can stop by the Recycling Center any time or call to make an appointment (435-797-2011).

- Trash or Treasure display, week of March 22-26, USU Quad
  • The Aggie Recyclers Club is creating a display of things that have been thrown away on campus that could have been recycled and turned into something new.

- Shrinking Landfills display, March 8, TSC patio
  • A trailer filled will bails of recycled material will be on display to give passers-by a life-sized look at just how much space trash takes up if it’s not recycled.

- Learn how to be a better recycler, Feb. 16, 23, 25 and March 11, 23, 25, TSC basement
  • Marcia Potter, recycling education coordinator, will disperse recycling information so people on campus can learn how to be better recyclers. People can also sign up for a special recycling facility tour.

Things you can do to ensure USU meets its recycling goal:

- Campus employees can get a recycling container for their office by calling the Recycling Center at 435-797-2011.

- On-campus housing areas can provide recycling containers for residents.

- Always put recyclable materials in recycling containers found throughout campus.

- The Recycling Center has a drop-off area that is open 24/7. Anyone can bring their recyclables from home to USU’s facility.

- The city of Logan doesn’t recycle glass or Styrofoam, but USU does. Bring these items to the drop-off instead of throwing them in the trash.

- The Recycling Center hosts USU’s surplus sales. Instead of throwing away old computers, desks, chairs, etc., USU sells these items to the public at a low cost.

Every recycling center is different. To learn more about items USU recycles, visit the USU recycling Web site.
