'Pirates' Opens: Second Week Coming Up

The Gilbert and Sullivan classic comedic operetta The Pirates of Penzance opens at Utah State University Thursday, March 1, and continues Friday and Saturday, March 2 and 3. The production then plays a second week, March 7-10.

Presented by the Department of Theatre Arts in the Caine College of the Arts, The Pirates of Penzance can be seen at the Morgan Theatre of the Chase Fine Arts Center. Curtain time for all performances is 7:30 p.m.

The production features a guest director from London, Colin Baldy. He currently runs an opera touring company in England — Hand Made Opera — and is experienced in performing works of Gilbert and Sullivan. He has previously worked at USU with USU Opera Theatre where he directed a number of works, including another Gilbert and Sullivan piece, Trial By Jury. His credits include singing all principal baritone roles in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and he has been a member of two professional theater companies specializing in these works, the London Savoyards and the New Savoyards.

In the USU production students of all majors participate. Lynn Jemison-Keisker, musical director for The Pirates of Penzance and director of USU Opera Theatre, prepared the cast for Baldy’s arrival.
