HASS Week at USU
The College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences Week at Utah State University is Feb. 8-12. For the 2010 HASS Week, the HASS Council has collaborated with Career Services to provide two workshops for students. Both workshops will be held in Merrill-Cazier Library.
The first workshop is “Creating Effective Cover Letters and Resumes” Monday, Feb. 8, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the library, Room 154. The second workshop, “How to Hold a Successful Interview,” is Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2-3 p.m., at the same location.
“Our council thought this would be a perfect time for students to refresh their interview skills and update their resumes before they begin graduating and entering the workforce or before interviewing for summer jobs ,” said HASS Senator Josie Olsen.
Free hot chocolate will also be served to students and faculty on campus Feb. 10 and 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the plaza near the water fountain outside the Taggart Student Center. The cold weather warm up is provided by HASS Council.
“We want to give back to the members of the university for working so hard all semester in such a cold environment,” Olsen said.
Finally, students will sell “I [heart] Suki” shirts for $5 and buttons for $1 all week long in TSC Room 326 to raise money for student scholarships. Yasuko Brown, also known as “Suki” or “The Pizza Lady” is famous for selling food in The Hub and agreed to be the “face” for the products in order to support the students.
“Yasuko has become a campus celebrity,” Olsen said, “and she wants the best for students. She supported the idea because it was ultimately generated by students for students.”

[Editor’s note: In her role as HASS Senator, Olsen writes an officer column. Below is a portion of a column she wrote in conjunction with HASS Week.]
“The College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences is going through great transitions. We are not looking for one new dean to lead us through the challenges that face our college, rather two, as we find ourselves split from being the largest college on campus, consisting of 14 departments, into two separate colleges: Humanities and Social Sciences and The Caine College of the Arts. I support this divide because it will ultimately lead to better representation for all the students when energy can be more focused on specific needs of students. If you are in the college of HASS and have any lingering questions about the many changes we are facing, please feel free to contact me by email at josie.olsen@aggiemail.usu or stop by my office on the third floor of the TSC. I am always interested to hear your concerns, problems, and/or input.
“I have loved serving you as your HASS senator this year and I thank you for the opportunity to get further involved. I look forward to the future, excited to see what new heights HASS will reach.”
