The Faculty Development and Diversity Workshop series, sponsored by Utah State University’s vice provost for faculty development and diversity, begins this semester Thursday, Sept. 17, at 3:30 pm in the Taggart Student Center Auditorium with a presentation entitled “Excellence in the 21st Century Academy: Creating and Sustaining a Culture of Inclusion, Diversity and Social Justice.”
The presentation is by Mathew L. Ouellett, director of the Center for Teaching at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and editor of “Teaching Inclusively: Resources for Course, Departmental and Institutional Change in Higher Education.” Ouellett will explore what matters and works in creating and sustaining inclusive higher education environments.
Ann Austin, vice provost for faculty development and diversity, encourages anyone, on and off campus, interested in promoting best practices of teaching and learning to attend.
“None of us wants to think that our classroom, syllabi or instructional strategies convey bias,” Austin said. “Yet unintentional discrimination can occur if we don’t carefully consider our own cultural background and the backgrounds of the students we teach. Dr. Ouellette will share a unique perspective that will add to the ongoing conversation about student development by allowing us to view our own practice through a different set of lenses.”
