'Dollars for Change' Lecture

Former Utah State University gymnast Katie Rutherford (2001-05), will be on the USU campus to share her post-graduation experiences with a non-profit organization she established called Dollars for Change. She is featured twice Monday, Oct. 6, in the Taggart Student Center Stevenson Ballroom, first at 12:30 p.m. and again at 7 p.m.

Her presentation is free and all are invited.

Dollars for Change is asking for just one dollar from every American, Rutherford said. Proceeds are being used to support the community of Kurland in South Africa.

“Throughout the first year of operation, I traveled around and returned to South Africa this past March with a little more than $15,000 to support the community of Kurland,” Rutherford said. “I worked for five months on development projects, the largest being the construction of an additional multi-purpose classroom attached to the village’s primary school.”

Rutherford’s work in Kurland was conducted in conjunction with a local non-profit there. She will return to Kurland at the end of November 2008, to continue ongoing projects. An after-school program for the children of the community will be implemented.

“I want to share my story with Utah State, as I realize none of this would have been possible had it not been for my USU education and the Logan community,” Rutherford said.
