Civic Awareness Week

Civic Awareness Week begins Oct. 26 bringing events to Utah State University. The week is designed to raise student awareness of politics and government through political debates, student debates, a documentary movie and more. Civic Awareness Week concludes Friday, Oct. 30. 
 
The week’s events include:
 
Monday — Oct. 26
Controversy Encouraged Student Debate — 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Taggart Student Center HUB
 
The debate will feature students from five groups on campus, including GLBTA, the College Republicans, the College Democrats, a representative from the Young Americans for Liberty and the College Green Party. During the first half hour of the debate, the students of the groups will present formal answers to prepared questions. During the second half hour, students in attendance will be allowed to ask questions. Topics that will be covered at the debate include abortion policy in Utah, tax reform, national health care reform, gay marriage rights and raising Utah taxes to save higher education.
 
Tuesday — Oct. 27
Street Fight Documentary — 8 p.m.
Taggart Student Center Ballroom
 
Street Fight follows the campaign of Rhodes Scholar and Yale Law graduate Cory Booker running for mayor of Newark, N.J., against incumbent Sharpe James. The political battle highlights important questions of democracy, power, poverty and race. When James accuses Booker of not being “really black,” community voters are forced to look at how we define race in America. Admission to the documentary is free.
 
Wednesday — Oct. 28
Logan City Council Debate — 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Taggart Student Center West Ballroom
 
Four finalists are competing for the two available seats on the Logan City Council. The candidates will be campaigning in the TSC West Ballroom a half hour before and after the debate. The finalists are Holly Daines, Dean Quayle, Steven Stokes and Tony Wegener.
 
Thursday — Oct. 29
The Party Party — 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Taggart Student Center International Lounge
 
The Government Relations Committee is having a party. All the political parties and groups on campus will be represented at the Party Party and each will have a booth with propaganda and information on why they are the best. Free Aggie Ice Cream will be served while supplies last.
 
Friday — Oct. 30
Logan City Mayoral Debate — 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Taggart Student Center West Ballroom
 
Mike Morrill and incumbent Randy Watts will participate in a debate on campus featuring issues on renters’ rights to street parking passes.
