Race, Society, Environment - Minor

College of Arts & Sciences

About This Minor

As a truly interdisciplinary minor, Race, Society, Environment (RSE) offers students from across the university opportunities to deepen their understandings of race-related issues.

The minor includes courses from more than twenty USU departments and encourages students to expand their perspectives and tailor their studies to their academic, career, and community goals.

At the core of the minor is a recognition that race is an idea with a history that intersects with many of the most pressing issues of our time. Examining race in its broader historical, social, and environmental contexts opens space for more productive and nuanced conversations about complex issues.

What You Will Learn

Students completing the minor acquire foundational understandings of race that enable them to address a wide range of important issues from various disciplines, including social work, biology, cultural studies, engineering, sociology, environmental studies, history, the arts, and more. Every RSE minor will collaborate with a faculty mentor to design and complete a culminating, forward-looking project that identifies possibilities for further engagement with the complex intersections of race, society, and environment.

Through the RSE minor, students develop valuable skills that prepare them to make meaningful contributions in their scholarly, professional, and personal lives. The minor emphasizes open communication, cultural competence, and careful research and analysis, and it includes opportunities for collaboration, independent project design, community engaged learning, and faculty mentorship.
