Local Domino's Pizza owner wins Summerfest songwriting contest

band at Summerfest June 21, 2004 | LOGAN -- Scott Nielsen, of Logan, won this year's KVNU/KNFM songwriter's contest on Saturday at Summerfest, the city's annual summer extravaganza, held June 17 to June 19 at the Logan-Cache County Fairgrounds.

Summerfest is a place where the community can gather to enjoy local music and art. Many local and regional musicians gathered to showcase their talents. Forty-three songs were submitted for the 13th annual songwriter's competition. The seven finalists performed their music on Saturday.

Each performer received a participation prize of gift certificates to local restaurants and businesses.

Nielsen won a $200 guitar from KSM Music. With the instrument in hand, Nielsen performed a song he had written 20 years ago, called Kisses of the Moon.

This is a second-time win for Nielsen. He won the contest, which he has entered five times, back in 1999.

When asked how many songs he has written, Nielsen said he has a whole drawer full of ideas. He doesn’t have as much time for songwriting lately as he would like. He keeps busy raising his family and co-owning the local Domino's Pizza with his brother.

The first runner-up was Roger Nix of West Jordon. He sang a country song he had written in 1996 called Mr. Used To Be. He said he wrote this "superficial" song in 10 to 15 minutes after his band buddies scratched a number he had written for them to play. They claimed the first song was much too deep for a country music band to play, so he came up with Mr. Used To Be.

The other five finalists were Shane Harris and his band performing Nowhere Soon, Roger Berger and Shirley Whitman performing Needle in a Haystack, Carl and Lannis Sorensen with Madly in Love With My Baby, Saydi Hornsby singing and playing on the keyboard White Sheets, and Jake and Cal Linford performing,Amy isn't Amy Anymore.

Al Lewis from 610 KVNU said the station would be accepting submissions for next year's songwriter's contest between April 10 and May 10, 2005.
