World Premiere of 'The Crossroads Project: Emergence' at USU
The Fry Street Quartet is featured in concert Tuesday, Sept. 22, 7:30 p.m., Caine Performance Hall. The evening includes the world premiere of "The Crossroads Project: Emergence," and the new work “Emergence” by Libby Larsen.
Utah State University’s Department of Music presents the Fry Street Quartet in concert featuring the world premiere of composer Libby Larsen’s Emergence for string quartet. The new work is part of the quartet’s ongoing Crossroads project, and includes theatrical direction by Adrianne Moore, head of the theater department in the Caine College of the Arts, and original film by Conor Provenzano, an independent filmmaker from Salt Lake City.
The concert also includes Bartók’s String Quartet no. 2, Op. 17.
The world premiere of Emergence was written for the Fry Street Quartet as a part of the Crossroads Project, an ongoing endeavor by the FSQ and Robert Davies that creates multimedia performances exploring topics related to global sustainability. The piece is funded with support by the Tanner Trust Foundation, the Caine College of the Arts, the Sounds of Science Commissioning Club, which is dedicated to the expression of science through music, and in part by the University of Utah’s Entrepreneurial Faculty Scholars program.
Larsen is one of America’s most performed living composers. She has created a catalog of more than 500 works spanning virtually every genre, from intimate vocal and chamber music to massive orchestral works and more than 12 operas. Grammy Award-winning and widely recorded, Larsen is sought after for commissions and premieres by major artists, ensembles and orchestras around the world and has established a permanent place for her works in the concert repertory.
“The Crossroads Project: Emergence” joins “Crossroads: Rising Tide” as the second chapter in a growing collection of performances comprising The Crossroads Project, an experimental and continuing collaboration between science and the arts, bringing to bear the power of performance art on the topic of human sustainability.
Tickets for the Fry Street Quartet’s Sept. 22 performance are $15 general admission, $10 seniors, youth, USU faculty and staff and free for USU students with ID.
