World Music: More than Meets the Ear

A guest speaker at Utah State University’s Museum of Anthropology presents “Music as a Language” at the next Saturdays at the Museum event.

The museum hosts Cathryn Clayton, a musicology professor from the University of Utah, Saturday, Aug. 11. She will speak at 1 p.m. and perform music from around the world on harp.

Event organizers said museum visitors will have a chance to use all their senses to explore musical traditions from around the globe. They also can make rain sticks.

“Music is powerful because everyone understands and relates to it regardless of their language or culture,” said Britt McNamara, the Saturdays program planner. “It is an important force for cultural understanding and unity. While music can foster global harmony, the goal of this Saturday is simpler: to provide museum visitors the opportunity to listen to different types of music and create music of their own.”

In addition to the Saturdays at the Museum activity series, community members and USU students alike can visit the museum during its standard operating hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Funding for the Saturday events is provided by a grant from the United States Institute of Museum and Library Services. More information about the IMLS is available online.

The USU Museum of Anthropology is on the USU campus in the south turret of the historic Old Main building, Room 252. Admission is free. For Saturday activities, free parking is available in the adjacent lot, south of the building.
