Convenience is the most commonly given reason why motorists use their own vehicles rather than public transportation. "The car represents freedom for most American drivers," says Utah State University researcher Ed Stafford. "People want to go where they want when they want." Only in major cities, where parking is limited and expensive do more people opt for public transport.
