When Prescribed Burns Backfire

Public land managers use prescribed burns to reduce wildfire risk, but the tactic can backfire – as in the 2003 Cascade Springs fire, which escaped and burned 7,800 acres northeast of Provo. While the incident sparked intense public criticism, USU professor Mark Brunson says it provided fire officials an opportunity to educate citizens about wildfire prevention and rebuild trust.
