We're Talkin' Trash for RecycleMania 2007

Utah State University joined the friendly competition of RecycleMania, an event that includes 201 college and university recycling programs in the United States and provides the campus community with fun, proactive activity in waste reduction. The competition kicked off Jan. 28.

During the next 10-week period, campuses compete in a variety of contests to see which institution can collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita and the campus with the highest recycling rate.

 

This is Utah State’s third year competing in RecycleMania, entering the Per Capita Classic, Waste Minimization and Targeted Materials “Paper” competitions. Last year USU placed 9th in the Waste Minimization category, and USU Recycling wants to bring the trophy home this year.

 

Everyone on campus can help by:

 

1. Spreading the word about the competition to colleagues and students.

 

2. Recycling EVERYTHING.

 

3. Contacting USU Recycling with suggestions for places to locate recycling bins or ways to increase recycling. USU Recycling has free desk-side bins available. And,

 

4. Remembering what items USU Recycling accepts for recycling and the services offered (see the detailed list below).

 

The RecycleMania competition runs Jan. 28 to April 7. Organizers call on Aggies to make USU’s efforts in RecycleMania a success. For more information, or to see a list of participating schools, go to the Web site.

 

 

1. All paper (white, mixed, books, colored paper, magazines, junk mail, envelopes, etc.)

 

2. Shredded paper (bagged please)

 

3. Cardboard

 

4. Aluminum cans, all plastics, glass bottles and tin cans

 

5. Rigid, white packing Styrofoam (not peanuts, colored or squishy foam)

 

6. Small batteries

 

7. Scrap metal

 

8. Wooden pallets

 

SERVICES PROVIDED BY USU RECYCLING (call 797-2011 to request these services)

 

1. Special pick-ups. USU Recycling will pick up large or bulk material, including boxes of brochures/magazines or excessive amounts of shredded paper.

 

2. Office clean-out bins. Large bins are available for those cleaning an office or file cabinets. The bins can be filled and switched out or removed. Plan an office clean-out day or week during Spring Break.

 

3. Bins for special events. Aluminum/plastic recycling bins are available for special events. For those planning a meeting, conference, sporting event, get together, walk-a-thon, information booth or any activity with beverages, USU Recycling can provide bins. Bins will be dropped off, then picked up with all materials collected during the event.

 

4. Office recycling briefings. The recycling education coordinator can help anyone or any office on campus learn about recycling opportunities and provide accommodating bins and labels. Call Jay T. Price for details, (435) 770-6229.
