Wellness Center offers 'Family Works' Class for Aggie Parents
The popular “Zits” comic strip features 15-year-old protagonist Jeremy Duncan who struggles with angst, boredom and parents “who don’t understand anything.”
For Aggie parents of all the “Jeremy Duncans” out there, Utah State University’s Student Wellness Center announces an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to participate in “Family Works.” The free, interactive 4-week class offers tips for improved communication and effective discipline. Class topics include helping youngsters build self-esteem and talking with them about drugs and alcohol.
“The class isn’t limited to lecture,” says Jamie McKinlay, program coordinator in USU’s Student Health and Wellness Center. “We recognize that parents benefit from sharing their experiences, so classes will also include discussion.”
Classes begin Wednesday, May 9, and will be held May 16, May 23 and May 30, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Taggart Student Center room 335. Lunch will be provided for the May 9 session and participants are invited to bring their own lunches for the remaining sessions.
The Family Works classes are funded by a grant from state and federal grant money administered through the Bear River Substance Abuse Program.
Advance registration is required and space is limited. To register, contact McKinlay at 435-797-7867 or jjmckinlay@cc.usu.edu.
