Water Resources Economist Jan. 30 Water Initiative Speaker
Utah State University’s Water Initiative welcomes water resources economist Douglass Shaw to campus Wednesday, Jan. 30. Shaw, a professor at Texas A&M University, presents “The Economics of Instream Flow Management with Uncertainties about Fish Stocks,” at 4 p.m. in the Biology-Natural Resources building, room 102. His talk is free and open to all.
Shaw’s research focuses on the economics of risk and uncertainty associated with the contamination of resources and its resultant impact on human health. He has published more than 60 papers in a variety of scientific journals and books. Shaw’s recent articles investigate the risks of ozone pollution for asthma patients, consumption of contaminated fish and drinking water, and nuclear waste transport, along with the economic impact of people living in areas stricken by natural hazards such as earthquakes and hurricanes.
Shaw recently published the book, Water Resources Economics and Policy: An Introduction, which provides an introduction to the economics of water resource allocation and analyzes relevant policy issues derived from all over the world.
The USU Water Initiative is an interdisciplinary collaboration of the university’s Utah Water Research Laboratory and the colleges of Agriculture, Business, Engineering, Natural Resources, Science and Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences. Established in 2003, the initiative fosters collegial sharing of water-related research and ideas throughout campus and the community.
Upcoming Water Initiative seminar speakers include Michael Dietz, faculty member in USU’s Department of Environment and Society, on Feb. 6; Douglas Jackson-Smith, faculty member in USU’s Department of Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology, on Feb. 13; and Chris Luecke, head of USU’s Department of Watershed Sciences, on Feb. 20.
