Virgins Behaving Badly

USU researchers note that 11th century stories of the Virgin Mary depict a queen of mercy who readily rescues sinners. In 13th century literature, however, the Virgin occasionally maims or kills those who offend her, which researchers believe reflects medieval audiences' experiences with the capricious violence of the ruling class.
