Vice President for Advancement will be Introduced Tuesday at Utah State

Utah State University President Kermit L. Hall will introduce Utah State’s new vice president for university advancement, M. Scott Mietchen, and his wife, Lisa, at a public reception Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 1:30 p.m. in the David B. Haight Alumni Center on campus.

 

The public is invited to the announcement and a reception will follow. Mietchen currently is executive director of development at the University of Utah. In his new role at Utah State, Mietchen will oversee the leadership of all fundraising and related development matters, all alumni affairs, and public relations and marketing. He also will serve as president of the Utah State University Foundation. Mietchen begins at Utah State on Nov. 1.

 

Mietchen said he is excited to join the students, faculty and staff at Utah State and to help bring together all the resources of the community so the university can reach even greater heights of quality.

 

“Utah State is one of the premier research institutions in the nation, not just in the state, and I am proud to be a part of that commitment to quality,” he said. “I have high expectations that I can help bring recognition and acknowledgement about this exceptional university.”

 

Mietchen has 20 years of comprehensive experience in institutional advancement with various organizations, including fund raising and alumni relations at the University of Utah where he has been since 1992. He previously worked as associate director of development for the Utah Symphony and as director of development for the American Diabetes Association’s Utah office.

 

“Scott brings a wealth of experience in Utah development efforts, accompanied by a stellar national reputation,” Hall said. “I expect Scott to make excellent use of our new Salt Lake office to reach Aggie supporters in the Salt Lake Valley and beyond. We are, indeed, fortunate to have such a strong and gifted person join our ranks.”

 

Hall gave special thanks to Utah State Board of Trustees member Richard Shipley, who chaired the search committee, and to the rest of the search committee.

 

“The committee worked long hours during this important process, and I thank each of them for their service,” Hall said. “We can’t be more pleased with the person they selected.”

 

While at the University of Utah, Mietchen served most recently as campaign director of the university’s third comprehensive campaign, now in its early planning stages, and he managed a campus committee overseeing the planning and implementation of the comprehensive campaign. From 1994-2000 he served on the executive team of the University of Utah’s Sesquicentennial Campaign, which raised $769 million. He was director of major gifts at the university for 11 years, where he built and managed the major gifts program at the Carnegie Research 1 institution. Utah State and the University of Utah are the state’s only Carnegie Research 1 institutions.

 

Mietchen managed the 10-member team responsible for the identification, cultivation and solicitation of individual major gift prospects. He also managed several small campus campaigns during his tenure. He holds an appointment as an adjunct instructor in the political science department at the university.

 

Mietchen will be housed at Utah State’s new branch office in Salt Lake City where he will help establish Utah State’s presence in the state’s capital and economic center.

 

“The advancement office already has a strong presence in Logan, and we will maintain that commitment always,” Mietchen said. “This new office will enhance our efforts to reach out to our metropolitan constituents along the Wasatch Front, where we already have a strong academic and Extension tradition.”
