Utah State's Piano Program Offers Concerts and Classes

The piano program, a part of the Department of Music at Utah State University, offers several opportunities for those interested in the piano — whether it's listening to great performances or the fundamentals of piano study. A series of concerts is on tap, as well as registration for the program's renowned Youth Conservatory.

 

First up is a series of piano recitals in the "Cool Classics" Recital series.

 

Once a summer some of the greatest pianists of the region gather on Utah State's campus to provide the "Cool Classics Summer Recital Series." The series runs every other night July 25-30.

 

All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. in room 214 of the Chase Fine Arts Center on the Utah State campus. Cost is $5 per evening or $15 for all four recitals. Tickets are sold at the door and all proceeds go toward piano scholarships in the department.

 

"Many of the featured pianists are state, regional and national winners," said Ralph van der Beek, series coordinator and assistant professor and director of the Youth Conservatory in the music department. "The audience will be thrilled by the astonishing technique and inspired by the musical depth of these performers."

If the "Cool Classics" concerts inspire, the piano program can provide the training for young pianists through its Youth Conservatory. Offering a program that features private piano lessons, music theory classes and performance opportunities, the Youth Conservatory is preparing for 2005 registration.

 

Fall registration and an open house for new and returning students is Tuesday, Aug. 9, from 6-7 p.m. in the lobby of the Kent Concert Hall in Utah State's Chase Fine Arts Center. An orientation session for new members precedes registration from 5:45-6 p.m. Students should accompany their parents, since placement tests are given during the registration process.

 

A second registration is Tuesday, Aug. 30, also from 6-7 p.m. in the Kent Concert Hall lobby. An orientation for new members will likewise precede the registration from 5:30-6 p.m.
