Utah State's Gregg Gensel Announces Promotions for Two Assistants

Utah State [University] head track and field coach Gregg Gensel announced Thursday [Feb. 25, 2016] that assistant coaches Matt Ingebritsen and Artie Gulden have both received promotions.

Ingebritsen, who is in his 12th season at Utah State, has been promoted to assistant head track and field coach. Gulden, who is in his first season with the Aggies, was promoted to assistant head cross country coach.

“The two of them combined, Artie being the assistant head cross country coach and Matt being the assistant head track and field coach, makes my life seem saner because I can trust them to take care of business, where in the past I’ve had to guide everybody,” Gensel said. “Now, I can leave it to them. They both want to stick around and see this program grow, and we’re going in the right direction. I’m excited for both the long-term continuity of the program and the short-term.”

Ingebritsen’s main responsibility with the Aggies is working with the throwers. While at Utah State, Ingebritsen, who competed collegiately at Boise State, has coached seven individual conference champions, including Aggie great and All-American Krista Larson, as well as Lindsey Spencer, who set school records in both the outdoor discus and hammer throwing events in 2012.

“Matt has shown that he can be responsible and take control of situations,” Gensel said. “He is basically the kind of guy that a head coach needs to help run a program because one person with a program this size, it’s hard for them to know everything, so Matt brings that authoritative figure. He understands our sport well enough to help me know what we need to do and advise me, and motivate the kids — not only his athletes, but all of the athletes.”

Gulden’s main responsibility with the Aggies is working with the distance runners. He was a distance runner at Bucknell.

“Artie brings the same thing to the distance program that Matt brings to the throwers,” Gensel said. “He comes from a coaching background; his dad was a longtime coach at Bucknell. He’s always wanted to be a coach and this is his first opportunity to be a full-time coach, even though he’s been involved in coaching almost his entire life. He’s been around the sport and he understands what’s going on.”

Utah State is competing at the Mountain West Indoor Championships this weekend [Feb.25-27]. The three-day event, which concludes Saturday, is being held at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
