Utah State Women's Tennis Starts Spring Season; Three Matches in Two Days

Utah State [University] women's tennis is set to open the spring portion of its schedule as it faces Weber State Thursday, Jan. 22, and Idaho State and Colorado Mesa Friday, Jan. 23, in the first of three doubleheaders this season. All three matches will be held at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club.

"We're really excited to be hosting three matches in two days here in Logan," said USU head coach Sean McInerney. "With our roster size, our plan is to get everyone some playing time, get everybody out there, get their feet wet in college tennis, get all the freshmen playing at some point during the week and get all the returners going. We want to give ourselves an opportunity to see what we need to improve on before we play a very talented BYU team at the end of the month."

Utah State had a strong fall tournament season, posting 73 total wins in singles and doubles play. Freshman Sabrina Demerath recorded nine singles wins, while sophomore Nini Guensler and senior McKenzie Davis both earned eight singles wins. Davis also won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Regional Tournament, becoming the first Aggie to win the tournament. As a result, Davis was ranked as the No. 1 singles player in the Mountain Region by the ITA. Freshman Maggie O'Meara recorded five singles wins, along with sophomore Lexi Turley. In doubles play, Guensler and Turley teamed up for five wins, while Demerath and O'Meara also grabbed five wins. Davis partnered with junior Kallie Sperry for four wins.

Last season, Utah State topped Weber State twice, both times by a score of 6-1, and Idaho State once, beating the Bengals 6-1. Against the Wildcats, senior McKenzie Davis went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles, as did junior Kallie Sperry and sophomore Nini Guensler. Against Idaho State, Davis won in singles and doubles, along with Guensler and sophomore Lexi Turley.
