Utah State [University] women's tennis head coach Sean McInerney announced that junior Nini Guensler and sophomores Sabrina Demerath and Meghan Lyall will act as the team's captains during the 2016 dual match campaign.
Last season, Guensler played primarily at the No. 2 singles position and was second on the team with 16 dual match wins. Guensler also posted a 4-1 record against Mountain West opponents and had a 2-0 record against opponents ranked in the Mountain Region.
"Nini is an unbelievably hard worker and is one of the major reason our program has grown so rapidly," McInerney said. "She has grown so much, not only as an athlete, but as a teammate and person over her past two years at USU. She is a great example for the team of what persistency and determination can help you achieve."
As a freshman last season, Demerath notched eight singles wins during the dual match season playing anywhere between the Nos. 2 and 6 spots in the lineup. Demerath was also third on the team with 17 total wins between the fall tournaments and spring dual matches.
"Sabrina's enthusiasm is contagious, and she is such a positive leader for our program," McInerney said. "She is an incredible teammate and positive competitor that has become an irreplaceable member of this program."
During the 2014-15 season as a freshman, Lyall recorded 15 singles wins, including 12 dual match wins playing between the Nos. 4 and 6 spots in the lineup. She was unable to compete this fall due to an injury.
"Meghan is the heart and soul of this program and a great representative of what a student-athlete should embody," McInerney said. "She is a natural leader, an amazing competitor and extremely coachable."
Utah State opens its 2016 dual match campaign when it hosts Gonzaga Saturday, Jan. 16, at 11 a.m. at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club. Prior to the match, the Aggies will honor McKenzie Davis, who graduated as the program's all-time wins leader last year, with the ITA Mountain Region Player of the Year award she earned at the conclusion of her senior season.
