Utah State University Women's Center Celebrates 30th Birthday

The Utah State University Women’s Center for Lifelong Learning celebrates its 30th birthday Saturday, Oct. 23, in the Taggart Student Center (TSC) on campus.

A public reception, refreshments and historical displays in the TSC Walnut Room will kick off the celebration at 3 p.m. The reception will be followed by a formal program in the TSC Auditorium at 3:30 p.m. Former directors Helen Lundstrom, Anne Hatch, Cecilia Foxley and Sharon Smock, as well as past and present board members, will be recognized. Hatch will relate stories, and a historical slide show will illustrate the center’s growth. The formal program will be followed by a ribbon cutting to dedicate the new Women's Center space in the Center for Women and Gender Programs, on the third floor of the TSC.

The Women's Center has sponsored a wide array of programs. More than 100 National Women's History programs have featured visual arts, dance, drama, music, films, panel discussions and speakers in the last three decades. The center provides information about opportunities for personal and professional development, helps individuals develop leadership skills, recognizes women’s achievements and encourages deserving, returning women and men with scholarships.

“The Women’s Center has evolved because enough people cared in the beginning and continue to understand that a women’s center at Utah State is a valuable and important resource,” said Director Janet Osborne. “The wide array of programs and activities support greater understanding of gender-based issues and encourages dialogue on how those issues affect us as individuals and as a society.

“The center is a tangible expression of Utah State University’s commitment to provide an equal opportunity climate and an environment free from discrimination,” Osborne said.
