Utah State University Theatre Production Goes To Regional Conference

Utah State University’s fall semester production of The Laramie Project was judged to be among the region’s best and was invited by the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) to be presented at the American College Theater Festival Region VIII conference in Arizona. The announcement was made in a letter to Utah State President Kermit L. Hall by region chair Richard Bugg.

 

“We are delighted that your university will be participating in this year’s festival,” Bugg’s letter stated. “It is a distinct honor to be selected as a festival production.”

 

Utah State University’s production was presented by Utah State Theatre and was directed by faculty member Kevin Doyle.

 

Approximately 200 plays were entered in the regional competition, and only nine schools were invited to bring a full production to the regional conference. The Laramie Project will be adjudicated by the KCACTF national team for consideration of participation at the national festival in Washington, D.C.

 

“Obviously, this selection speaks highly of the quality of the students and faculty in your theatre program at Utah State University,” Bugg’s letter continued. “KCACTF applauds Utah State University, the theatre department and all the artists involved with The Laramie Project for a superior artistic achievement.”

 

This year’s Region VIII conference will be held on the campuses of Phoenix College and Glendale Community College in Phoenix, Ariz., Feb. 8-12. More than 1,200 students and faculty are expected to attend.

 

“The Laramie Project is the third invitation to showcase Utah State University theatre productions in consecutive years,” said theatre arts department head Colin Johnson. “The original children’s play The Boy Who Drew Cats, directed by Lynda Linford, represented the school two years ago when we hosted the festival here, and Anton in Show Business, directed by Adrianne Moore, was invited to the festival at Cal State in San Bernardino last year.”
