Utah State University Press Publishes May Swenson Compilation
Body My House: May Swenson’s Work and Life, a compilation of poetry and essays from throughout Swenson’s literary career, was published and recently released by the Utah State University Press. Paul Crumbley and Patricia Gantt edited the book.
Crumbley is an associate professor of English and co-director of American studies at Utah State. Gantt is a professor of English at Utah State.
Swenson is a Utah State alumna and was born and raised in Logan, Utah.
“It is only fitting that the first collection of critical essays on Swenson and her literary universe should have its inception at her university and its press,” Gantt said.
According to Gantt, Swenson produced 11 books of poetry and received nearly every major poetry award in the United States.
Swenson has been compared to such poets as Walt Whitman and Elizabeth Bishop, Crumbley said.
“The book is intended to create awareness of who she is and the work she’s done,” Crumbley said. “It includes references to a wide range of her published and unpublished poems, letters and diaries, some of which were previously unavailable.”
Crumbley said many literary works in the book are refinements of work presented at the May Swenson Symposium, a three-day symposium held at Utah State in June 2004.
