Utah State University Hosts College Reading and Learning Association Conference

"Funds of Knowledge" was the theme of Utah's first College Reading and Learning Association Conference held June 8 at Utah State University. Sponsored by USU's Academic Resource Center, the gathering drew 38 participants from eight academic institutions.

 

The conference theme represented the fund of information conference participants shared with each other. CRLA is a group of student-oriented professionals active in the fields of reading, study strategies, learning assistance, developmental education and tutorial services. Members typically develop and manage academic support programs including Supplemental Instruction, tutoring services, academic strategy courses and individual consultations.  All programs facilitate student development of strategies for academic success.

 

"A vital function of the organization is to provide a forum for the interchange of ideas, methods and information to improve student learning," said Noelle Call, director of USU's Academic Resource Center. "In a spirit of community, members share their own successful experiences with others so all may benefit."

 

Keynote speaker was Sherry Marx, an assistant professor of multicultural education and ESL education at USU.

 

"Dr. Marx talked about the importance of using 'funds of knowledge' to better understand and successfully work with students," Call said. "She highlighted the importance of getting to know the cultural strengths of individual students and their families by interviewing and observing them in their home or on their home turf or  by using classroom inventories to gain background information on students.

 

Workshop topics included "Cashing in on Experiences: Tutoring at an Evolving Institution,"  "Study Strategies for Athletes" and "Growth and Success of Tutors through CRLA Certifications," among other sessions.
