Utah State University Hosts Annual Tri-State Band Symposium

The band program at Utah State University hosts the third-annual Tri-State Band Symposium Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5-6, in Kent Concert Hall of the Chase Fine Arts Center on USU’s campus (approximately 1110 E. 610 North, Logan).

The Tri-State Symposium is an honor band experience for the tri-state’s — Utah, Idaho and Nevada — finest wind and percussion players and their directors. The symposium includes rehearsals and sectionals with the finest wind and percussion clinicians in the Mountain West, said USU’s director of bands Thomas P. Rohrer, a faculty member in the Department of Music in the Caine School of the Arts.

 

A concert, open to all, caps activities at the symposium. The “Finale Concert” is Saturday, Dec. 6, 3 p.m., in Kent Concert Hall. The concert is free and the public is invited. The concert showcases the Tri-State Symposium Band as well as bands from USU, including the Wind and Jazz orchestras, along with selected chamber ensembles.

 

The conductor for this year’s event is Gary Viebranz, director of instrumental ensembles at Penn State-Erie.

 

Those attending the Tri-State Band Symposium first gather Dec. 5 with chair placements for the 81-member ensemble. This year the group represents 20 high schools where student attendees were selected through director nominations. Students rehearse Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday morning. The group meets for a symposium luncheon Saturday prior to the final concert.
