Utah State University Hosts 43rd Annual Pow Wow
Utah State University hosts the 43rd Annual 'Echoing Traditional Ways' Pow Wow Feb. 26-27 in the Nelson Field House on USU’s Logan campus.
Utah State University hosts the 43rd Annual Echoing Traditional Ways Pow Wow Feb. 26-27 in the Nelson Field House on USU’s Logan campus. The pow wow is sponsored by the Utah State University Access and Diversity Center and Native American Student Council.
“The 43rd annual event exhibits a variety of Native American dance, music and regalia that honors the ways of our ancestors and hearkens back to traditional lifestyles and sacred legends,” said NASC President Stacie Denetsosie.
Pow wows are held in the spring to celebrate new beginnings, honor warriors, personal achievements and provide ceremonies for dropped eagle feathers.
“These traditions are still intact today,” said Denetsosie. “Traditional and contemporary pow wow functions bring Natives and First Nations together to honor their cultures through song and dance.”
The Echoing Traditional Ways Pow Wow is the first of the year in the state of Utah’s pow wow circuit. Each year, USU’s pow wow features competitive dancing and drum circle singing, including a $1,000 winner-take-all drum contest. Dance categories include Golden Age, Traditional, Grass, Fancy, Jingle, Tiny-tots, a NASC committee sponsored Switch Dance and a give-away for senior citizens. This year’s pow wow will also include a hand-drum contest in honor of Dorathea and Ashlyn George.
Special guests this year include Southern Cree Juniors from Montana, Lane Neaman from Kearns, Utah, Hank Johnson from Reno, Nevada, William Leonard from Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, and the newly appointed Miss American Indian Utah State University.
Grand Entry begins at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, with additional processions occurring Saturday, Feb. 27, at noon and 6 p.m. Parking is available in the Big Blue Parking Terrace, located next to the Taggart Student Center, as well as the University Inn parking lot, east of the terrace.
Admission to the event is $4 for the general public, $3 for senior citizens and USU students with ID and children 7 and under are free. Concessions are provided.
