Utah State University Grounding Van Fleet

In response to Monday's deadly van crash, Utah State University is officially suspending operation of all full-size and 15-passenger vans for the next 30 days.

The 30-day suspension will allow time for a more complete review and evaluation of issues related to the use of these vehicles, said Glenn Ford, vice president of business and finance.

This decision impacts all vans except those used solely for cargo-carrying purposes.

All primary van operators in the vicinity of the Logan, Utah, campus are being asked to immediately return vans to the university's motor pool. The remaining vans must remain parked at other USU locations around the state.

During this period of time, the university will analyze options, including the elimination of all full-size vans from its fleet, mechanical upgrades, use of alternative vehicles and the use of charter buses with designated drivers.

Of the 50 full size vans, 14 are used for cargo-carrying purposes; 18 owned by the motor pool for daily rentals and long-term lease; and 18 owned by university departments and divisions.
