Utah State University Choirs Present Annual Wintersongs Concert
Choral performance groups from Utah State University open the holiday concert season with “Wintersongs” Thursday, Dec. 1, in a special concert setting at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Hyde Park. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and features the USU Chamber Singers, Women’s Choir and University Chorale.
“This year’s “Wintersongs” concert will be magical, with a timeless, mystical feel far from the commercial, artificial glitz we often see during the holidays,” said Cory Evans, director of choral activities at USU.
“We will perform some fantastic Christmas music in a beautiful space,” said Evans. “This is the kind of concert one would see in a European cathedral on Christmas Eve with beautiful choral music, beautifully sung.”
The organ of the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church will be featured as well as a brass quintet, bells, a candlelight processional and congregational singing.
The evening will include John Rutter’s Gloria, performed by the University Chorale and a brass quintet. The USU Women’s Choir will perform Utah composer Bernel Hales’ Lullaby and Rutter’s arrangement of Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day.
The USU Chamber Singers performance will feature a Utah premiere of Philip Stopford’s arrangement of Coventry Carol and a fresh percussive setting of O Viridissima Virga by Minnesota composer Janika Vandervelde with text by 12th century mystic Hildegard of Bingen.
The concert will end with a performance of the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah.
The concert is free and recommended for children ages 8 and older.
St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church is located at 725 S. 250 East. in Hyde Park, Utah.
