Utah State University Accounting Teams National Finalists in Deloitte Competition

The Utah State University graduate and undergraduate tax teams were once again selected as national finalists in the 2004 Deloitte Tax Case Study Competitions. The two Utah State teams will travel to Orlando, Fla., for the finals Nov. 19-21.

“The Utah State School of Accountancy has two of the 12 teams selected for the finals,” said, Richard L. Jensen ATK Thiokol professor and head of the College of Business’ School of Accountancy.

The Deloitte Foundation, a non-profit arm of the professional services firm Deloitte & Touche USA LLP, is sponsoring the National Tax Case Study Competition, a nationwide interscholastic competition. The student teams selected to advance to the national finals came from an original field of 66 teams that represented more than 40 colleges and universities.

“This is the fourth consecutive year that Utah State’s graduate tax team has reached the final six,” Jensen continued. “It will be competing in the finals with Brigham Young University, the University of Central Florida, the University of Denver, the University of North Carolina – Charlotte and the University of Kansas.”

The undergraduate team is making its third appearance in the finals in the last four years – they were also finalists in 2001 and 2003,” Jensen said. The undergraduate team will compete with Brigham Young University, the College of William and Mary, the University of North Carolina – Charlotte, the University of Northern Colorado and Boston College.

“Under the leadership of Dr. Vance Grange, who serves as the teams’ advisor, the Utah State tax teams have brought national exposure to an outstanding tax program here in the Utah State School of Accountancy,” Jensen said.

In the competition, teams have five hours to complete a complex, hypothetical case study that tests the students’ knowledge on a variety of tax topics.

“The panel of judges that evaluated each team’s written response was impressed with the high caliber of solutions prepared by the students,” said Mark M. Chain, president of the Deloitte Foundation and national managing partner of human resources management for Deloitte. “Knowledge, teamwork and a focus on complex, real-world issues were on vivid display when the teams met in eight regional sites.

At the conclusion of the national competition, the winning team in both the undergraduate and graduate divisions will receive a $10,000 award for its school and $1,000 scholarships for each team member. The second place team in each division will be awarded $500 per student and $5,000 for its school. All other participating team members will receive national honorable mention awards of $250 each and $2,500 for the school.
