Utah State Track & Field has Solid Day at Mark Faldmo Invite

Utah State [University] track and field endured the early rainy weather enough to win 16 event titles as part of 43 top-three finishes at USU's lone home meet of the season, the Mark Faldmo Invitational at the Ralph Maughan Track Stadium on Saturday [April 16, 2011]. Several events were delayed for a short period of time due to the downpour in the early afternoon, but when the skies cleared, the rest of the meet was run under sunny conditions.

Senior Jason Holt highlighted the day's events as he ran a blistering 1:49.89 in the 800m, his personal-best and the Western Athletic Conference season-best time. Senior Alexis Meyer also ran a personal-best in the 800m as she took first with a time of 2:12.89. Joining Holt and Meyer with event titles and personal-best marks were five freshmen, Kylie Hirschi in the 400m hurdles (1:00.80), Tanner Hunt in the 400m (48.01), Kyle McKenna in the 5000m (15:24.06), CJ O'Neal in the long jump with a jump of 6.67m (21-10.75) and Reagan Ward in the triple jump with a mark of 14.31m (46-11.50).

Other Aggies winning their event included seniors Ashlee Cannon (100m hurdles), Eric Larson (1500m) and Clint Silcock (high jump), along with juniors Katelyn Heiner (long jump), Spela Hus (shot put) and Joe Canavan (shot put) with a WAC leading mark of 17.93m (58-10.00). Sophomores Alex Litzsinger (1500m) and Silas Pimentel (100m, 200m) also captured their event titles to complete the Aggies' collection of 16 wins.

"Today kind of went like the weather," said USU veteran head coach Gregg Gensel. "The meet started off not so great, but we ended it with a bang. Overall, we had a great meet. We had a lot of conference-leading marks and a lot of great performances by these kids. The thing that I liked the most was the athletes' attitudes throughout the day. Even though the weather was bad, they were either pitching in and helping run the meet or performing to the best of their ability, considering the weather. When the weather turned nice, they exploded and did some really nice things. As a coach that is what you want them to do, have a good attitude and have a great meet."

Utah State had athletes place in the top five in 26 other events, including 43 total top-three finishes on the day. Taking second was Cannon (100h), juniors Kim Quinn (1500m) and Aaron Clements, sophomores Bailee Whitworth (long jump), Eric Follett (high jump), Kenny Hamlett (triple jump), Jaymin Vicker (discus) and David Cluff (3000m steeplechase) along with seniors Shannon Prince (discus) and Nick Bolinder (5000m). The USU men and women's 4x400m relay teams both also finished in second-place.

Hamlett and Ward were joined with O'Neal in a tremendous 1-2-3 finish in the triple jump with each athlete jumping their personal-best, not just bettering them but shattering them. Rounding out the top three for the Aggies in their respective events were freshmen Lauren Hoskie and Mikey Payne in the 100m while fellow freshman Kylie Hirschi (100m hurdles), Hannah Williams (1500m), Daphne Jones (long jump), AJ Boully (400m hurdles), Devin Lang (1500m) and Jeff Taylor (3000m steeplechase) also garnered a third-place finish.

Also ending the day in third-place for Utah State were sophomores Aubrie Haymore (200m) and Bri Campbell (high jump) as did Quinn (5000m) and fellow juniors Damian Szade (long jump) and John Johnson (pole vault). Senior Steven Atkinson (5000m) was the lone senior to take home a third-place prize.

Saturday's meet also marked the first visit back to Ralph Maughan Track Stadium by former USU assistant and current BYU assistant coach Corey Murdock, who is also a four-time All-American Aggie student-athlete and holds the USU record in the 400m hurdles (48.85).

USU men and women's track and field teams will now prepare for the Cal Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Oakland, Calif., April 21-23 before competing in the Boise State Border Clash in Boise, Idaho, April 30 and at the Mid-Week Conference Prep in Provo, Utah, May 4. The 2011 Outdoor WAC Championships will be held in Honolulu, Hawai'I, May 10-13.
