Utah State Track & Field Competes at Mountain West Indoor Championships

Utah State's men and women's track and field teams will compete in the 2015 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 26-28.

Utah State's [University] men and women’s track and field teams will compete in the 2015 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of New Mexico at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M., Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 26-28.

In their inaugural season in the Mountain West last season, the USU men placed fourth, while the USU women placed sixth. Over the three-day championships, Utah State garnered 16 first-team all-Mountain West performances.

“It’s the conference championships, we feel like we had a solid indoor season,” said USU head coach Gregg Gensel. “We’re excited to go in there and have some great performances and see where things go from there. I think we have a lot of great individuals on both the men and women’s sides and I believe that they can finish high in the conference.”

Action for the championships starts Thursday with the women’s pentathlon at 11 a.m. MT, and continues Friday with field events at 12:30 p.m. and track events at 1:30 p.m. Saturday’s activities start at 10 a.m. in the field and at noon on the track, with the awards ceremony slated for about 3 p.m.

The Aggies return six athletes with Mountain West Indoor Championship titles. Senior Nic Bowens won both the 60m (6.61) and 200m (21.11) a year ago as well as the Mountain West Men’s Outstanding Performer of the Year award. Junior Cole Lambourne took home the title in the 400m (48.36) and senior Eric Shellhorn won the mile (4:21.10). The women’s side returns senior multi-eventer Chari Hawkins who was named the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Female Athlete of the Year along with being named the league's Outstanding Performer at last year’s Indoor Championship as she won the pentathlon with a school and meet record 4,173 points, while also placing second in both the high jump (1.74m/5-08.50) and 60m hurdles (8.44).

The men’s 4x400m relay team, who took second last year with a time of 3:21.16, returns junior Tanner Hunt and junior Cole Lambourne. Other returners for the Aggie men are junior Parker Bluth who placed second in the 60m (6.73) and third in the 200m (21.63), with senior Briton Page finishing third in the 800m (1:51.97).

Utah State’s results, along with a recap of the day’s events will be posted to the USU Track and Field page at the conclusion of the meet.
