Utah State Signs 27 to Football Letter of Intents Feb. 7

Feb. 7, 2007

LOGAN, Utah - Brent Guy's third recruiting class at Utah State, features 27 signees, including seven Utah high school players.

Among the local signees are 2006 first-team all-state selections Austin Alder (WR, Provo) and Tanner Richins (OL, Logan). Two other local signees earned previous first-team all-state honors in Mark Watterson (WR, Mountain Crest, 2003) and Monte "Junior" Keiaho (DE, Logan, 2005).

Other Utah signees include 2006 second-team all-state selections Funaki Asisi (OL, Provo), Peter Caldwell (PK/P, Davis), and Nate Needham (LB, Pineview).

The 2007 recruiting class features 12 players from the state of California, seven from Utah, six from Texas and one each from Kansas and Oregon. Twenty four of the 27 players are high school players.

USU signed 13 offensive players, 13 defensive and one special teams player this year. Six of the offensive players are offensive linemen, with three wide receivers, two running backs and two quarterbacks on the list. Defensively, USU signed five linebackers, four linemen and four defensive backs.

"The class is pretty balanced,” Guy said. "The only position we didn't take was a tight end/fullback/H-back. We decided we needed to get two tailbacks in the class, so tight end was the only position we didn't hit. This year was a deep offensive line group and we felt the quality and depth of the group was as good as we have seen.

"It was a very competitive recruiting year," he added. "We went against a lot of WAC teams to get these kids.

"One thing I am really proud of is not only the athleticism of this group, but our average ACT score is 23 and the average SAT is 925 and the standards for those are 17 and 820," Guy said. "I think we recruited not only good athletes, but good students, which is important for building the program. You have to have kids who want to get an education as well."

The coaching staff will get a look at the new players who are already on campus when Spring practice begins March 21. The incoming freshmen will report in August. Utah State will open the 2007 season hosting UNLV on a yet to be determined date.
