Utah State Remembers Martin Luther King with Jan. 18 Candlelight Vigil

Utah State University’s Black Student Union (BSU), under the auspices of the university’s Multicultural Student Services office, will host a candlelight vigil honoring the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 6 p.m. The gathering, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Sunburst/International Lounge of the Taggart Student Center (TSC) on the Utah State campus.

 

Featured speaker for the gathering is Darron T. Smith, a doctoral candidate in the department of education, culture and society at the University of Utah. A scholar and author of African-American history and experience, Smith serves as a lecturer at Utah Valley State College and an adjunct professor at Brigham Young University. He is the co-editor of the recently published book, Black and Mormon.

 

Smith and the evening’s other speakers, BSU president Phiwokuhle Mnyandu and Moises Diaz, director of the Multicultural Student Services office, will offer reflections on Dr. King’s life, work and legacy.

 

The vigil will conclude with the opportunity for participants to light individual candles in silent commemoration of Dr. King’s efforts and his impact on the advancement of human rights and world peace.
