Utah State Professor Elected President of Science Association
Carla Johnson, a professor in the Secondary Education Department at Utah State University, was elected president of the National Middle Level Science Teacher Association.
Johnson will lead the organization for three years, as president-elect, president and past president. As president, she will advocate for the needs of middle school science teachers to organizations, businesses and the scientific community.
“I am very happy to be elected president so I can work on advocating for the needs of middle-level science teachers on a national level,” Johnson said. “This will further my career through collaborative relationships with other science educators and scientists in the field.”
Johnson received the Outstanding Doctoral Student Award for Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Cincinnati in 2003 and the Franklin B. Walter Award for Education of All from the Ohio Department of Education in 2001.
Johnson serves on the National Science Teachers Association’s editorial review board for the The Science Teacher journal, as an endowment committee member of the School Science and Mathematics Association and the National Association for Research in Science Teaching’s award committee and manuscript preview panel. She also serves on the National Science Teachers Association and National Council Accreditation of Teacher Education’s university science education program review committee and as a member of the Association for the Education of Teachers of Science.
Johnson received her bachelor’s degree in science and social studies for middle-grade education at Eastern Kentucky University and her master’s and doctorate in education for curriculum and instruction from the University of Cincinnati.
The association focuses on the needs of middle school science teachers. It works with the Middle Level Division of the National Science Teachers Association to improve science teaching through networking and sharing educational research and effective teaching activities.
Carla Johnson has been elected president of the National Middle Level Science Teacher Association.
