Utah State Gymnastics Ranked 16th in the Nation/Athlete of the Week Named

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State gymnastics jumped up nine spots this week to start the week ranked 16th in the nation. This the highest ranking for the Aggies in more than five years.

 

Utah State now has a RQS of 195.250, 0.015 behind 15th place Central Michigan. The Aggies are tied for 14th on beam with a 48.855, 20th on floor with a 49.000, 23rd on bars with a 48.670 and 24th on vault with a 48.805.

 

The Aggies also took over first place in the Western Gymnastics Conference and improved from seventh to fourth in the North Central Region.

 

Utah State will compete in its final meet before the conference championships as it travels to Denver to face #17 Denver and #22 Kentucky, Saturday, March 19.

Carroll Named Utah State University Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah- Jaycee Carroll, a freshman from Evanston, Wyo., averaged 17 points and seven rebounds in the Big West Conference Tournament and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. For his efforts, Carroll was named Utah State Athlete of the Week on Tuesday [March 15]. A state media panel votes on the weekly award.

 

In the Aggies first game against Cal State Fullerton, Carroll, a 6-2 guard, scored 12 points on five-of-12 shooting from the field and two-of-four from beyond the arc in a 84-77 win. He also handed out four assists and pulled down seven rebounds.

 

In the championship game against 16th-ranked Pacific, Carroll scored 22 points on nine-of-19 from the field and two-of-five from beyond the arc. He also pulled down seven rebounds. The Aggies defeated the Tigers 65-52 and earned an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament. Carroll became the first freshman in Big West basketball history to earn the tournament's MVP award.

 

Carroll was named the Big West Conference Freshman of the Year, Freshman All-American by collegeinsider.com and honorable mention All-American by Rivals.com.

 

Other Nominees

 

Women's Basketball — Brittany Tressler ... Scored a team-high 13 points in a 75-63 loss to UC Irvine in the Big West Tournament. Tressler scored 13 points on four-of-10 from the field and three-of-six from beyond the arc. Tressler added four rebounds, two assist and one steal.

 

Softball — Quela Leonhardt ... Helped the Aggies beat UVSC 8-6 in the second game of a double header. Leonhardt had two hits, both of them singles, in the second game. In the first game, Leonhardt went two-for-three from the plate with one single and one homerun, to go along with one RBI, but loss 4-2.

 

Golf — Cody Huot ...Was USU's top finisher in the 19-team UC Riverside Braveheart Classic. Huot tied for 29th individually, while the Aggies tied for 15th-place. Huot shot a 72 in the opening round, followed by a 76 and 73 to finish with 221. Huot has been USU's leading finisher two times this season.

 

Gymnastics — Jessica Parenti  ... Scored a season-high 9.825 on the bars and tied her season-high on the beam with a score of 9.850 in a 196.425-195.100 loss to 16th-ranked BYU. Parenti also scored 9.050 on the vault and 9.800 on the floor. This was the first time in four matches that Parenti competed in the all-around, and did not win it.
