Utah State Gymnastics Heads Into This Week Ranked 31st in the Nation

THIS WEEK - #31 Utah State (4-3, 2-1) hosts conference-rival #48 Boise State (1-5, 0-4) Thursday, Feb. 1, in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum at 6:30 p.m. MST.

 

NEXT WEEK - Utah State will host in-state rival #3 Utah (3-0) on Friday, Feb. 9, in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum at 6:30 p.m. MST.

 

WAC GYMNAST OF THE WEEK - Jessica Parenti-Otte was named WAC Gymnast of the Week for the second-time this season for the week of Jan. 29. She also received the honor for the week of Jan. 8. This is the third-time in her career that she has received this honor, as she received it once last season.

 

 

Senior gymnast won All-Around to lead Aggies to win at San Jose State meet

Utah State senior gymnast Jessica Parenti-Otte was named the Utah State Athlete of the Week for the period ending Jan. 28, it was announced Wednesday [Jan. 31]. Parenti-Otte, who won in a unanimous vote by a state media panel, received the USU honor for the first time this season and the fifth of her career.

 

Parenti-Otte, a native of Glendora, Calif. (Glendora HS), won the all-around for the second time this season to lead the Aggies to a win in the four-team meet Friday [Jan. 26] at San Jose State, with a season high score of 39.300, while posting season highs on beam (9.850) and the floor exercise (9.850) and finishing in the top-five in each event and placing first on bars and beam. She also posted season highs on vault (9.825) and bars (9.900) at home against BYU on Jan. 22, while finishing in the top-five in all four of those categories and placing first on bars and second in the all-around.

 

The USU Athlete of the Week award is Parenti-Otte's second honor this week, as she was recognized with the Western Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Week award. It marked the second time this season for Parenti-Otte to receive the conference honor and third time in her career to garner the WAC honor, as well as fourth total conference award after receiving the Western Gymnastics Conference honor as a sophomore in 2005.

Basketball — Men: Chaz Spicer, senior, forward, Indianapolis, Ind. (Lawrence North HS/Kankakee CC). Averaged 15.0 points and 6.0 rebounds for Utah State in a pair of road losses at nationally ranked Nevada (79-62) and at Hawai'i (69-61). Spicer had 18 points and nine rebounds against the Rainbow Warriors, and 12 points and three rebounds against the Wolf Pack.

 

Basketball — Women: Danyelle Snelgro, sophomore, guard, Altadena, Calif. (John Muir HS). Netted 17 points in USU's two losses, dished out a combined eight assists and swiped four steals in the two games. Marked the sixth time this season that Snelgro has dished out four or more assists in a game.

 

Tennis — Women: Brianna Harris, freshman, Calgary, Canada (Bishop Carroll HS). In win over Montana on Friday [Jan. 26], won her match in two sets, the only Aggie to do so in the dual. In Saturday's loss to Montana State, again won her match in two sets and earned one of Utah State's two points in the Aggies' 5-2 loss.

 

Track — Women: Jennifer Twitchell, senior, Sandy Utah. (Jordan HS). Received first-place honors in the mile with a time of 4:54.01 which beats her previous indoor top ten mark in the mile of 4:54.71 leaving her with the third-fastest time in school history. Twitchell also clinched first-place in the 800-meter with a time of 2:16.07.

 

Track — Men: Kevin Liu, senior, Idaho Falls, Idaho (Idaho Falls HS). Came in second place in the weight throw with a mark of 62-06.00, which leaves him with the fourth longest throw in school history. Liu also claimed eighth-place in the men's shot put with a toss of 48-07.50.
