Utah State Gymnast Receives Shannon Miller Award

Utah State University freshman gymnast Katie Brown was recently selected as the 2013 recipient of the Shannon Miller award.

Named for Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast and Oklahoma native Shannon Miller, the award is presented to a gymnast who has brought recognition to the state of Oklahoma through her gymnastics.

“I’m so honored to receive this award,” Brown said. “I feel so blessed and thankful for all the people who believed in me and supported me in and out of the gym. I’m so glad to bring positive recognition to my sport.”

A Norman, Okla., native, Brown was selected for her stellar gymnastics accomplishments as well as her outstanding academic performance. Most recently, she competed in the 2013 Junior Olympics National Invitational Tournament where she placed first on vault, third on bars and beam and second in the all-around. An all-state qualifier every year, Brown is on full scholarship for the Aggies.

“I was very pleased to find out that Katie has been honored with the Shannon Miller Award,” said Utah State head coach Nadalie Walsh. “In my short time of getting to know Katie it is obvious to me why she was selected. She has amazing character, work ethic and is a very talented gymnast. I am proud of her for her previous accomplishments and cannot wait to watch her make a huge impact on the Utah State gymnastics program.”

Aggie junior Sarah Landes is also a Shannon Miller Award recipient, having earned the recognition in 2009.

The Utah State gymnastics team opens its 2014 campaign in a road meet at Iowa Saturday, Jan. 11.
