Utah State Golfer Seokwon Jeon Wins Salt Lake City Amateur

Utah State [University] golfer Seokwon Jeon kicked off his amateur golf season in style as the senior-to-be won the Richard C. Kramer Salt Lake City Amateur this past weekend [May 30-31] at Wingpointe Golf Course in Salt Lake City.

Jeon shot a 7-under 65 on Saturday and a 5-under 67 on Sunday to win by three strokes over Rhett Rasmussen, who also finished second in last year's SLC Amateur. Jeon's two-day total of 132 tied for the second-lowest score in the tournament's history.

“I felt good,” Jeon said. “The greens were really good, so I felt like I could roll in a lot of putts if I just hit it decently close. It was kind of windy, but I controlled the trajectory of my shots pretty well and I think that was key to playing good.”

The SLC Amateur was moved to Wingpointe due to a new water system being installed at Bonneville Golf Course. Jeon didn't mind the move at all.

“It was in pretty good shape, especially with the greens,” said Jeon, whose best round in a tournament is a 63.

During Jeon's first round, he chipped in for eagle on the 540-yard par-5 15th hole. He used a 60-degree wedge from about 40 yards out on a downhill lie to record the highlight.

Then on day two of the amateur, Jeon made three straight birdies on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes, respectively. In fact, he played the first nine holes Sunday at four-under-par as he birdied four of five holes during one stretch.

Jeon finished in 28th place at the 2015 Mountain West Men’s Golf Championships, which took place May 1-3 on the Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National Resort in Tucson, Ariz. He was tabbed the Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Week April 28 after taking second place at the BYU-hosted PING Cougar Invitational with a 5-under 211 (71-70-70).

Jeon, who was born in South Korea but moved to Utah when he was 9 years old, will return to the course he just tasted victory on this Sunday [June 7] when he competes in the Wingpointe Amateur.
