Utah State Faculty Member named Financial Educator of the Year
Alena Johnson is the latest faculty member in the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services to be named Educator of the Year.
She is a senior lecturer in the Family, Consumer, and Human Development Department.
Her award, from the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education, recognizes her work as a financial educator not only at Utah State University, but also as a webinar instructor for the AFCPE.
Johnson is often invited to share her expertise with the community, too. She has authored several publications used throughout Utah to make money management understandable.
“Finances are such an important part of everyone’s lives,” she said. “They spill over to relationships, work productivity and even health.”
About 1000 students learn principles of family finance from her every semester.
“One of the things I enjoy most about teaching family finance courses is that they apply to everyone, no matter their field of study,” Johnson said.
Johnson will receive the Mary Ellen Edmondson Educator of the Year award from the AFCPE during its conference in Bellvue, Wash., this November.
