Utah State Celebrates First Ever Research Week

Utah State University celebrates its First Ever Research Week April 11-15. Hosted by the Vice President for Research office, each day of the week will highlight one aspect of university research, with events designed for faculty, staff and students.

 

“Events during the week, such as lectures, presentations and workshops, are designed to recognize university research and help facilitate the research process,” said Brent Miller, vice president for research.

 

Monday, April 11, is Faculty Research Day. Utah State’s best faculty researchers will be honored at a luncheon, where the winner of the 2005 D. Wynne Thorne Research Award, Utah State’s highest research honor, will be announced. Also on Monday, workshops sponsored by the Sponsored Programs Office will be held throughout the day at the Eccles Conference Center. All faculty and staff are invited.

 

“The workshops will cover 10 of the most-requested topics related to research proposals, funding and administration,” said Dennis Paffrath, director of Sponsored Programs.

 

Undergraduate Research Day is Tuesday, April 12, and Graduate Student Research Day is Wednesday, April 13. These days include the Student Showcase and the Graduate Student Symposium, where students have the opportunity to present their research projects and compete for cash prizes. Also on Tuesday, Christine Hult, the 2004 D. Wynne Thorne Researcher, will present a lecture about the place of humanities in today’s information age.

 

Integrity Matters Day is Thursday, April 14, and focuses on ethical issues that are part of research. Teams from Utah State, Weber State University and Utah Valley State College will face off at USU’s first Ethics Bowl, requiring contestants to debate and discuss hypothetical situations requiring ethical judgments. Arizona State University ethics professor and nationally syndicated columnist Marianne Jennings will give a lecture entitled “A Business Tale: A Story of Ethics, Choices, Success and a Very Large Rabbit.”  The lecture is free and open to the public.

 

Research Week wraps up Friday, April 15, with Economic Development Day. In the morning, students are invited to come to the Eccles Conference Center and share their ideas about the university’s research park, Innovation Campus. Later in the day, faculty and staff are invited to attend a technology commercialization panel, which will help inform researchers about how to bring their ideas to market.

 

“Research is, and has always been, an important part of Utah State University,” said Anna McEntire, media specialist for the Vice President for Research office. “Research Week will help to bring that idea front and center.”
