Utah's School Superintendent of Year to Speak at USU

Dr. Martell Menlove, Utah’s school Superintendent of the Year for 2006, will discuss the impacts of federal No Child Left Behind legislation on Utah schools at a presentation Friday, March 3, at Utah State University.

Menlove speaks at 10:30 a.m. in the Edith Bowen Laboratory School auditorium. The public is invited and the presentation is free. Menlove is superintendent of the Box Elder School District, and he will be honored Friday night with a Distinguished Service Award from USU as part of its Founders Day activities.

 

“Dr. Menlove comes from a family of educators and has 30 years of experience in education, both in the classroom and at a number of administrative levels,” said Carol Strong, dean of USU’s College of Education and Human Services, sponsor of the presentation. “As Utah’s Superintendent of the Year, he is an articulate and committed champion for Utah’s school children. We are excited that he is coming to speak to our community, and we look forward to hearing his thoughts about how Utah’s schools are being impacted by the No Child Left Behind legislation.”

 

Menlove was selected by the Utah Education Coalition as Superintendent of the Year. He represented the state and was honored at national conference of the American Association of School Administrators. Menlove oversees more than 1,200 employees in 24 schools in the Box Elder School District, which enrolls approximately 10,500 students. He has been a teacher, a guidance specialist, a school counselor and a principal. He has also served on several state boards and committees, and he is currently active on the state Textbook Commission.

 

Menlove received his undergraduate degree in elementary education and later a doctoral degree in special education at USU. He was co-director of the Utah Assistive Technology Program in the Center for Persons with Disabilities at USU from 1990-1997. He is a former USU adjunct professor, and his wife, Ronda Rudd Menlove, is currently the assistant dean of Independent and Distance Education.
