Utah-Produced Food Served with a Side of Scholarships
At Utah State University it’s time for football season and the annual Utah Agricultural Products Barbecue. This delicious, long-standing tradition will be Oct. 11, just prior to the Aggies taking on Air Force in the 2014 Homecoming football game.
Sponsored by Utah’s Own, the barbecue features local agricultural products, including beef, dairy products, turkey, pork, onion rings, salad, lamb, corn, apples and more.
“It has been an honor for me to serve on the Ag Barbecue Organizing Committee the past 20 years and showcase Utah’s agriculture and food because the foods grown, made and manufactured in Utah are second to none in the country,” said Jed Christenson, chairman of this year’s event and director of marketing and economic development for the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food. “Everyone volunteers their time, money and products to showcase agriculture in Utah and provide scholarships to the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences.”
Each year, participating companies and commodity groups donate, prepare and serve the wide array of food at the event, with support from students, faculty and staff of USU’s College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. Over the years, scholarships funded by proceeds from the barbecue have helped dozens of students achieve their educations, Christenson said.
“By supporting the Ag Products Barbecue, you not only get to enjoy the wonderful abundance of Utah food, but you are supporting a very worthy cause,” he said. “You’re helping educate future generations of agriculturists and food entrepreneurs.”
The barbecue will be at Craig Aston Park (approximately 1350 N. 800 E., Logan) and tickets may be purchased in advance at 1-888-USTATE-1 or online at utahstateaggies.com/tickets. The price is $10 for adults (11 and older) and $5 for children (ages 3-10). Once inside, all the food and drinks are included in the admission price. The barbecue starts at 3 p.m. and continues to 6 p.m. (Come early for a full selection at this popular event.)
