Utah Lt. Gov Herbert to Speak at USU's Spring Runoff Conference

Utah Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert speaks Monday, March 27, at Utah State University. Herbert is the featured speaker at USU’s second annual Spring Runoff Conference March 27-28.

Herbert speaks at 11:30 a.m. in the Eccles Conference Center auditorium. The lieutenant governor, who leads state efforts concerning homeland security, transportation, water and rural affairs, will address critical Utah water issues.

“The Great Salt Lake Basin: Science, Ecology, Management, Policy” is the theme for the two-day conference, which is hosted by USU’s Water Initiative and open to the public. The gathering offers an open forum for discussion of societal and technical issues surrounding regional management and development of water resources.

“The Spring Runoff Conference is so named because it is held at the end of winter and in anticipation of spring’s runoff season – a time of anticipation and excitement in hydrology,” said Jack Schmidt, associate professor in USU’s Aquatic, Watershed and Earth Resources Department in the College of Natural Resources and conference co-organizer.

The conference opens March 27, at 8:30 a.m. and features talks by water scientists from universities throughout the United States, as well as USU experts. Topics include water conservation, the impact of weather and climatology on water systems, watershed management, stream restoration and hydrology. For a complete conference schedule, visit the Web site.

Cost to attend the conference is $20. Students with current ID are admitted free of charge. Online registration is available.

The USU Water Initiative is an interdisciplinary collaboration of the university’s Utah Water Research Laboratory and the colleges of Agriculture, Business, Engineering, Natural Resources, Science and Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences (HASS). Established in 2003, the initiative fosters collegial sharing of water-related research and ideas throughout campus and community.

Parking for the conference is available in the university parking terrace at 850 E. 700 North. The Eccles Conference Center is within walking distance of the parking terrace and the Logan Transit District Route 1 and 4 bus stop at the Veterinary Science building on 700 North.
