USU's Writing Center Opens Sept. 6, Expands its Reach at Three New Venues

The Utah State University Writing Center opens beginning Sept. 6 with its goal of providing face-to-face tutoring sessions and boosting the confidence, creativity and competence of student writers.

This year, the center has expanded beyond its single location to three additional locations – two on campus and one in downtown Logan.

Writing Center director Star Coulbrooke said the tutors at each center are not proofreaders, but specialists who can guide writers in such issues as content and organization. Tutors “help students apply the writing skills they’re learning in their core English classes” in their other courses, she said.

The Writing Center continues its operation in USU’s English Department, room 104 of Ray B. West Building.

Hours are Mon.-Fri. 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Mon.-Thurs 7-9 p.m.

Although the writing assistant is available for all university students at no cost, the English department continues oversight of all Writing Center venues. The new locations are:

Library Writing Center

Room 162, Merrill-Cazier Library

Hours: Mon-Fri, 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.

Science Writing Center

Eccles Science Learning Center (third-floor atrium overlook area), specializing in lab reports and scientific research papers.

Daytime hours:

Mon., Wed., Fri., 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Tues. and Thurs., 8:30-10:30 a.m.

Evening hours:

Mon.-Thurs. 5-7 p.m.

Cache Valley Community Writing Center

Logan Library, Juniper Room, 255 N. Main, Logan

Hours: Wednesdays 5-7 p.m.

This community writing center will offer free one-on-one consultations with professional tutors for all types of personal writing projects, including resumes, scholarship essays, letters to representatives and officials, memoirs, poetry, fiction and more.

The Science Writing Center and the Community Writing Center are walk-in only. Students seeking help in the library and Ray B. West locations can schedule an appointment online.
