USU's Wind Orchestra Hosts Logan High Wind Band in Fall Concert

Utah State University’s Wind Orchestra presents its fall concert Friday, Nov. 2, and the event includes a guest band. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Kent Concert Hall of the Chase Fine Arts Center (approximately 1110 E. 610 North, Logan) on campus.

Tickets are available at the door. Admission is $5 for adults, with a family ticket for $10. USU and school-age music students are admitted at no cost.

 

This year, the Wind Orchestra welcomes the Logan High School Wind Band, under the direction of Dan Stowell, as guests for the concert. USU’s Wind Orchestra and LHS Wind Band will play separately and together on a variety of works for symphonic wind ensemble. The headline piece on the concert is La Fiesta Mexicana by H. Owen Reed. The three-movement work, subtitled “A Mexican Folk Song Symphony,” includes several folk tunes from Mexico set in a symphonic format for concert band. The work has an established reputation as one of the top ten symphonies written for concert band.

 

The Wind Orchestra, the flagship ensemble of the USU Bands program, is a 45-member ensemble of the finest wind and percussion players at the school, said Thomas P. Rohrer, director of USU bands. It plays the finest contemporary wind music, as well as time-tested standards from the band repertoire. It performs three concerts during fall semester and an additional three concerts in the spring. Entrance to the group is gained through audition at the outset of each semester.

 

The Wind Orchestra has earned an outstanding reputation in the region by performing at the Utah Music Educators Convention and twice in four years at the College Band Directors National Association Western Division Conference.

 

Future events in the USU Band’s schedule include the annual “Sounds of the Stadium” marching band concert Saturday, Nov. 17, the second annual Tri-State Band Symposium Dec. 1, and a traditional holiday concert Dec. 2.
